Jalan Masjid India
|
|
Well, I'll see you at Starbucks KLCC and we'll have a chat about it. |

They see things others don't (and no, they don't see dead people...not that I know of), they feel things others don't (no,l nothing illegal nor obsene) and they think of things others wouldn't (no, they are not some cult following people...i think), and they won the Starlite short film award. To Aneem, Hafiz, Belle, Ebrahim, Lydia and the rest of the see-ers, feel-ers, think-ers... TAHNIAH!!

They have to wait for a dream before they can even start to carve. An inspiration from the spirits. And they only carve using nyireh batu (xylocarpus moluccensis - am trying to sound smart). They either use nyireh batu (the wood is fairer in color) or the reddish nyireh bunga. They usually take about a month to finish a wood carving.
Each village (each family) has its own patterns or designs. I guess that way you'll have your own personal spirits or moyang.
Now, it is getting more and more difficult for them to find nyireh batu around their area and they are very concerned that this would lead to the extinction of their ancient culture. UNDP tried to revive nyireh batu plantation but failed, due to lack of communication with the orang asli community.
Having spent time with them, the Jakuns of Tasik Chini an the MahMeris of Pulau Carey, I can feel their passion for the culture and I can also sense their worry that one day they will be forgotten.

The Rainforest Festival 2006
|
|
" If you build it, and they will come " - Van Morisson to Wayne in Wayne's World 2.
It rained, but the crowd refused to go away. It was the World Cup final, yet the crowd turned up.
I was at The Rainforest Festival for the full 3 days. The music was great. The Sarawakian folks were an excellent host. And with Heineken being one of the major sponsors, a big part was due (yes, girls in skimpy clothes, men doing crazy stupid things).
I will be posting some of the pics I took during the 3 day event.
